Spam Fighting: Faux Holiday Edition

 Today’s Top Threat
Downloader.Ajuxery
Downloader.Ajuxery is a stereotypical downloader Trojan where once it is on your computer it will open the gates and flood your computer with more viruses. While the virus isn’t necessarily destructive, the viruses that it invites can be. The more viruses on your computer, the more damage they can do. Fortunately this is a very easy to remove virus.

The Timely Tale of Tax-related Threat Troubles
“Tax season in the US and Canada has always been popular among cybercriminals. After all, it’s one of the few reliable times in a year that a lot of money gets thrown around online, due to the convenience of filing (and) paying taxes over the Internet. As such, we make it a point to look out for threats specifically targeting taxpayers before, during and after tax season and every year, we invariably find a lot of them. This year was no different, with the threats we spotted ranging from a Silverlight vulnerability exploit to UPATRE malware spam campaigns. We also found the usual spam and phishing threats that came out at the last minute, even after the deadline has passed.”

Today’s Most Ridiculous Spam E-mail
I think most people would agree that we do not need to add more gifting to Easter, but I appreciate the friendliness of the spam sent to me!

Spam In Real Time
One of the greatest tools a modern day spammer and virus maker has is to be timely. If you receive an email on the fourth of July saying Merry Christmas, you are going to ignore it immediately, but if you get something during Easter about Easter, you might take it a bit more seriously. I know around any sort of holiday, event, or season change there comes a whole new wave of spam and viruses, we see viruses planned around holidays that look inviting, cute, and advertise free items related to the season. What we can say for sure is that spammer look for any reason big or small to hit you up with some new ideas. It is always a great idea look to see who sent you the email, what is says, and unless positive do not click on attachments or links!
